Telegram Ban In India? The reason behind Telegram CEO Durov’s detention is the app’s content filtering policies, which have received criticism from celebrities like Elon Musk and Edward Snowden.
A probe into the messaging app Telegram has been opened by the Indian government because of worries that it is being used for illicit purposes like gambling and extortion. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) are working together to conduct this investigation, which could result in the app being banned. This information was reported by Moneycontrol.
Is Telegram Going To Be Shut Down In India?
Whether Telegram stays active in the nation will depend on the investigation’s conclusion. The investigation may show whether Telegram’s existing compliance with India’s Information Technology (IT) Rules, which call for the designation of key executives and the release of monthly compliance reports, is adequate.
Why Was Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Arrested?
This comes after Pavel Durov, the CEO and founder of Telegram, was recently arrested on August 24 in Paris. Durov’s detention is related to the app’s content moderation policies, which have allegedly failed to stop illegal activity on the platform. This has garnered condemnation from prominent personalities such as Elon Musk and Edward Snowden.
After traveling from Baku, Azerbaijan, Durov was apprehended by French authorities at the Le Bourget airport, which is close to Paris. The Office for Minors in France (OFMIN) obtained a search order for him, leading to his detention. The OFMIN is looking into allegations that he is involved in fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime, and terrorism propaganda.
Wide Use In Russia
With plans to hit one billion members in the next year, Telegram, a popular social media network in Russia, Ukraine, and other former Soviet states, has developed into one of the biggest worldwide. But because the network lacks moderation, questions have been raised over its potential to support illegal activity.
French media sites TF1 and BFMTV have reported that the inquiry into Durov is centered on the app’s inability to stop drug trafficking and other illegal activities. Durov has not been seen in France very much, as he travels most of the time outside of Europe, thus his arrest is a noteworthy step.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Telegram has grown to be an essential conduit for information, both accurate and false. Important political people use it to communicate and spread information about the ongoing conflict, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
