For the Delhi-NCR rains region, which saw significant rain on Wednesday night, a red alert has been issued. The city experienced traffic jams and waterlogging as a result of the constant downpour.
Following heavy rain that battered the city on Wednesday evening, many low-lying neighborhoods of Delhi-NCR rains (National Capital Region) were submerged under water, severely impairing traffic flow and daily life. Because of the bad weather, ten aircraft from Delhi were rerouted to different places.
Due to the current weather, the Delhi administration has decided to close all schools on Thursday.
People were left stranded on the highways for hours due to long lines of cars on a number of important routes, including the Delhi-Noida Expressway and Mathura Road, as well as important destinations like ITO, AIIMS, Pragati Maidan, Kashmere Gate, and Sarai Kale Khan, among others.
Among the flooded places is Old Rajinder Nagar, where three IAS candidates lost their lives as a result of water in their institute’s basement. The National Flash Flood Guidance Bulletin also included Delhi in its list of ‘areas of concern’, the weather department said.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena directed officials to remain alert in light of the heavy downpour.
From 8.30 am to 8.30 pm, Salwan Station in Mayur Vihar, East Delhi, reported 119.0 mm of rain. The weather bureau reports that 118.5 mm of rain fell in Gautam Buddha Nagar, the neighborhood that houses Noida.
“Apart from ensuring minimum inconvenience to people in general, they are advised to specifically address issues at sites prone to waterlogging, including coaching centres,” he said in the post on X.
Delhi Minister Atishi announced that the Municipal Corporation and other government agencies are working to address the situation.
The minister announced later, “In light of very heavy rainfall today evening and forecast of heavy rainfall tomorrow (on Thursday), all schools – government and private – will remain closed tomorrow (on Thursday)”.Because of Delhi-NCR rains.
TRAFFIC HIT ACROSS CITY
As the movement of vehicles was affected in many areas, the traffic police issued directions and asked commuters to avoid certain roads.
Traffic was disrupted on the carriageway from Moolchand towards Chirag Delhi and on both carriageways on Anuvrat Marg. On Outer Ring Road, the carriageway from Chirag Delhi towards Nehru Place was impacted due to waterlogging under the Savitri flyover.
At Chatta Rail Chowk, traffic movement has been disrupted on Syama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, and traffic was being diverted from the Chatta Rail red light and Lothian Road.
Commuters coming from NS Marg towards ISBT Kashmiri Gate have been directed to take Kodia Pul and Mori Gate Boulevard Road. Traffic was also affected on Mahatma Gandhi Marg due to waterlogging at Nigam Bodh Ghat, and vehicles were being diverted from Chandgi Ram Akhara.
FLIGHTS DIVERTED
Due to poor weather and heavy rain, ten planes from Delhi Airport were diverted to other places in a half-hour, between 7.30 and 8.00 pm.
Two of them were redirected to Lucknow, and eight were sent to Jaipur.
WATERLOGGING IN MANY AREAS
Heavy rain summered several roads in the city. Stormwater drains could be seen overflowing in many locations, pumping water onto the streets.
Affected areas include ITO, RK Puram, Janpath, Parliament Street, Karol Bagh, Nauroji Nagar, Pant Marg, Mayur Vihar among other locations.
In Noida, waterlogging was reported in areas including Gaur City, Film City and many underpasses on the Delhi-Noida Expressway.
In Gurugram, water accumulated on key roads at Subhash Nagar and Old Railway Road, among other areas.
A house collapsed in North Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi area and a rescue operation was launched. In another rain-related incident, a wall of a school collapsed in Daryaganj area.
RED ALERT IN DELHI
More intense rain is expected, thus the India Meteorological Department has issued a red signal for the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi.
According to the most recent forecast, “clouds have converged over Delhi from all four sectors,” meaning that moderate to heavy rain is likely in the next hours in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad. Thirty to fifty km/h was predicted as the wind speed.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a statement in the evening stating that “moderate rainfall accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur at North Delhi, Central Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South-East Delhi, East Delhi, NCR in the next two hours.”
Apart from Delhi-NCR, nearby areas including Panipat, Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Jind, Hisar, Karnal, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Nuh, Rewari, Alwar, Narnaul, Palwal, Hodal, Hathin, Aligarh, Bulandshahr, and Mathura are also likely to see showers.
The meteorological service has forecasted wet conditions through August 5.
