Fasting Rules for Hartalika Teej
Hartalika Teej fasting is observed rigorously from dawn on Teej to sunrise on Chaturthi, usually going a whole day without eating or drinking anything. The following are the main guidelines to follow during fasting:
- Preparation: Before the day of fasting, consume only satvik food (pure and simple food) and prepare for the Teej Puja. Complete all necessary preparations for the next day’s rituals.
- Sargi: On the morning of Teej, eat Sargi during Brahma Muhurta (between 4:30 AM and 5:16 AM). This meal includes fruits and sweets and is essential to maintain energy during the fast. The fast officially begins at 6:02 AM.
- Fasting: Women observing the fast refrain from food and water throughout the day. If health conditions such as pregnancy or illness make it difficult to observe the fast strictly, they can consume fruit or juice after Puja.
- Breaking the Fast: The fast is broken at sunrise on Chaturthi by consuming soaked black gram and cucumber. An elaborate meal is prepared afterwards for the entire family.
Rituals for Hartalika Teej
- Puja: Clay idols or pictures of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha are used in the Teej Puja. Installing the idols is best done in the afternoon, and the Puja is done during Pradosh Kaal, which starts at dusk.
- On Solah Shringar, women don brand-new attire and outfit themselves with the entire set of 16 traditional jewelry, or solah shringar. For married women, bangles, mangalsutra, sindoors, and other adornments are crucial. During the Puja, these things are also presented to Goddess Parvati.
- Offerings: People present Goddess Parvati with objects that represent marital bliss, including bangles and scarlet sarees. Women tell the tale of Hartalika Teej and perform the Aarti for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
- Post-Puja Rituals: Following the Puja, women give their mother-in-law gifts and prasad and ask for blessings. The blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are recommended for women who are fasting in search of their perfect life partner.
