A suspected case of Mpox has been identified in India, according to a statement issued by the Union Health Ministry on Sunday.

“A young male patient has been identified as a suspect case of Mpox. He recently traveled from a country currently experiencing Mpox transmission,” the ministry stated. The patient’s condition has stabilized after being kept apart. The ministry stated that his samples had been sent for analysis.

According to authorities, the patient has been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital’s isolation unit in Delhi.

According to the Health Ministry, “there is no reason for undue concern as the development of this case is consistent with the earlier risk assessment conducted by the NCDC (National Center for Disease Control)”.

The World Health Organization issued a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” for mpox, which is the highest degree of alert.

Experts evaluated the danger of the infection in India following the WHO alert and concluded that while there was a chance of a few imported cases, there was little chance of a significant epidemic with ongoing transmission.

While India has reported at least 30 cases and one death due to the infection since it was first detected in 2022, this is the first suspected case in the current outbreak. The concern regarding the current outbreak stems from the spread of clade Ib strain of mpox, which is predominantly being transmitted through sexual contact. When it comes to MPXV, there are two different clades — clade I and clade II — the former deadlier than the latter. Sexual transmission of clade I infection had not been reported previously.

The Health Ministry stated, “The nation has strong measures in place to manage and mitigate any potential risk and is fully prepared to deal with such isolated travel-related cases.” Since last month, health officials at seaports, land borders, and airports have been looking for the virus. Additionally, isolation rooms and laboratories are put up.

The mpox virus (MPXV) causes the viral infection known as mpox. Fever, headaches, aches in the muscles, back discomfort, low energy, enlarged lymph nodes, and rashes that resemble the pox and continue for two to three weeks are the most typical symptoms of mpox. Even though it is a self-limiting sickness, young people and those with compromised immune systems are most vulnerable to death.
