Its claim to fame is the well-known and low-cost Ghadi detergent, which went on to become one of India’s largest detergent brands. Big places and small things do go hand in hand, but when something or someone from a small town makes national news, that surprises people the most.
This is the tale of two brothers who began their humble Kanpur beginnings and business careers in the late 1990s and went on to become the richest men in Uttar Pradesh in 2022. The tale of how they reached the “Success-O-Clock” demonstrates how individuals from modest backgrounds can achieve great things.
Murli Dhar and Bimal Gyanchandani Success Story
The rise of Murli Dhar & Bimal Gyanchandani who transformed their family’s small soap-making venture into RSPL Group, a billion-dollar empire based in Kanpur.
Their story started in the year 1987 when Murli Dhar Gyanchandani and Bimal Kumar Gyanchandani launched the Ghadi Detergent, part of the billion-dollar RSPL empire. RSPL Limited (previously known as Rohit Surfactants Pvt Ltd) was founded in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, in 1988 by the late Dayal Das and his sons, Murli Dhar and Bimal Kumar.
In August 2011, they reorganized the business as RSPL Ltd, a public limited company, and changed its name to RSPL Pvt Ltd.
Story of Ghadi Detergent
Ghadi detergent was inspired by none other than another low-cost brand Nirma. When Nirma was the dominant player in the market, it was first introduced.
Nirma used to be the biggest thing in the laundry industry. Subsequently, other brands that were exclusive to washing machines and specific models began to appear. People began to realize that these detergents could be used for several things over time, according to Prof. Dheeraj Sharma of the IIM-A marketing faculty, who spoke with the Times of India.
Ghadi capitalized on this awareness and, since it was one of the low-cost laundry brands in India, it was purchased by several Indian households that regularly wash their clothes in low-cost detergent brands like Ghadi and occasionally use high-end brands for special occasions.
By the end of the 2011 fiscal year, the low-cost detergent company in Kanpur—which is currently supported by superstar Amitabh Bachchan—had exceeded the Rs. 2000 crore sales threshold. A third of the consumer products market is made up of Ghadi, which has expanded into Punjab, Bihar, and MP in addition to UP.
With a long history and in-depth industry knowledge, RSPL Group has created a massive conglomerate and created jobs across the nation. Millions of Indians are impacted by the wide range of products that the RSPL Group has developed.
Making it to UP’s Richest List
When RSPL Group owner Murli Dhar Gyanchandani was named the richest man in Uttar Pradesh in the Hurun India Rich List for 2022, it was evident how successful Ghadi had been. Murli Dhar Gyanchandani’s net worth was Rs 12,000 crore, placing him 149th out of all Indians.
With a net worth of Rs 8,000 crore, his younger brother Bimal came in third from Uttar Pradesh at number 220 on the list.
According to Forbes’ 2018 India rich list, both Murli Dhar and Bimal Gyanchandani enjoyed a massive net worth of 1.69 billion dollars at the 92nd spot. They were, however, dropped off in 2019.
