Mpox Outbreak 2024: The Union Health Ministry has alerted airports and land ports to be on the watch for Mpox signs among overseas visitors. In New Delhi, three hospitals specialize in treating mpox cases.
India-wide testing readiness and surveillance are being strengthened, even though no instances have been reported as of yet. The WHO has issued a public health emergency when there have been over 99,000 cases of mpox recorded since 2022.
India Preparation For Mpox Outbreak 2024
According to news agency PTI, the Union Health Ministry has directed land port and airport authorities at the borders of Bangladesh and Pakistan to exercise caution when dealing with foreign visitors who exhibit symptoms of Mpox.
Delhi Safdarjung Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital are the three hospitals in New Delhi that have been designated as focus facilities for the isolation, care, and treatment of Mpox patients. We’ve requested state governments to list comparable facilities that fall under their purview.
The prime minister’s principal secretary, P K Mishra, called a high-level conference on Sunday to evaluate the nation’s Mpox readiness. There are currently no Mpox cases in India, according to officials. The current assessment is that there is little chance of a significant outbreak that spreads over time.
Because mpox is so common in most of Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated it as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
Mpox Deaths Worldwide
According to a previous WHO announcement, 116 countries have reported 208 deaths and 99,176 cases of Mpox since 2022. There has been a consistent rise in mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

To quickly identify cases of Mpox, the health ministry has instructed staff to improve surveillance and put in place efficient procedures. The ministry stressed how crucial it is to set up testing facilities for early disease diagnosis. There are now 32 labs in India that are capable of doing Mpox tests.
Mishra emphasized on Sunday the importance of distributing preventative and treatment methods widely. He stressed the importance of launching a campaign to educate medical professionals about the symptoms and indicators of mpox virus and the need to promptly report cases to the surveillance system.

Global reports of Mpox cases increased dramatically last year, and this year’s tally has already surpassed that of last year. This year, there have been over 15,600 cases and 537 deaths reported from mpox outbreak.
