President Droupadi Murmu has appointed former Union minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar as the next governor of Jharkhand, replacing CP Radhakrishnan, who will become the new governor of Maharashtra, in a significant reorganization and governor appointment, according to a press release from Rashtrapati Bhavan. Assembly elections are scheduled for Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Haryana later in the year.
The president also named Lakshman Prasad Acharya the governor of Assam with the additional responsibility of Manipur, and Gulab Chand Kataria the governor of Punjab, succeeding Banwarilal Purohit, who had resigned earlier this year citing personal reasons, according to a press release released after midnight on Saturday.
The release stated, “These appointments will take effect from the dates they will assume charge of their respective offices.”
Acharya succeeded Kataria as the governor of Assam. Kataria was also designated as the administrator of the Chandigarh Union Territory. The notification read, “Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Sikkim, appointed as Governor of Assam and has additionally been given charge of the Governor of Manipur.”
Manipur’s governor, Anusuiya Uikye, took office in February of last year.

In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led state government and the Raj Bhavan under Purohit have been at loggerheads over various issues, including the calling of an assembly session and appointments of vice-chancellors of state-run universities .Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared on Sunday that he would welcome Kataria and collaborate with him.
“The president has appointed the new governor.We’ll collaborate,” Mann said to Chandigarh reporters. The AAP chief stated that while he appreciated Purohit, he attempted to foster a “conflict-filled environment” in the state.
Purohit tendered his resignation as the governor of Punjab and the administrator of Chandigarh in February of this year, and President Murmu accepted it.
While Radhakrishnan, who was also in charge of Telangana, will follow Ramesh Bais as the governor of Maharashtra, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart Om Prakash Mathur will succeed Acharya as the governor of Sikkim.
After being selected as the new governor of Jharkhand, which is headed for elections, veteran BJP leader and former Union minister of labor and employment Santosh Gangwar thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The party has always given me everything without asking for it. Now they have expressed their trust in me by making me the Governor. I am also grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this,” Gangwar, the eight-time Lok Sabha MP from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, told reporters.

Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde, a senior BJP leader from Maharashtra, has been named the next governor of Rajasthan, taking over for Kalraj Mishra. “Under your patronage and guidance, Rajasthan state will rapidly progress towards becoming a developed Rajasthan,” Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma wrote on X, congratulating Bagde on his appointment as governor.
The press release announced the appointments of former Assam congressman Ramen Deka and former Lok Sabha MP from Mysore, Karnataka, CH Vijayashankar, as governors of Chhattisgarh and Meghalaya, respectively.
