Symbiosexuality is a new form of sexual attraction. One is considered symbiosexual when one experiences romantic or sexual attraction to an existing relationship.
A Seattle University study suggests that singles might be lured to partnered couples. Symbiosexuality is the term used to describe when someone experiences romantic or sexual desire for another person in a relationship.
Symbiosexuals Meaning
The research paper, “Attraction to the Energy, Multidimensionality, and Power Shared Between People in Relationships,” was published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.
The study’s author, Dr. Sally W. Johnston, advises reconsidering the notion that attraction and desire are only present in one-on-one relationships. Her studies on “unicorns” in polyamorous partnerships sparked her interest in symbiosexual relationships.
A unicorn, according to VeryWellMind, is a person who relishes intimacy in a relationship but stays out of other areas of it.
Johnston noted that although sex has its advantages, the third party in these situations is often mistreated, objectified, and devalued.
The Pleasure Study, a bigger project that examines numerous facets of gender, sexual orientation, relationship patterns, cultural background, education, and interactions with couples, is the foundation for her present research.
What Pleasure Study Told Us About Symbiosexuality?
There was a survey with 65 questions covering a variety of themes as part of the Pleasure Study. Johnston focused his attention on responses from those who expressed their attraction to a pair as a whole, as opposed to each individual. At least 145 of the 373 survey participants said they had experienced this kind of attraction.
Over 90% of these people identified as queer, and 87.5% as polyamorous. Most of the participants were middle-class, white, and had completed their university education.
The vitality, multidimensionality, and power that people in partnerships share attract a lot of people to symbiosexuality, according to Johnston.
The majority of individuals who have symbiosexual attraction are outgoing, value consideration, intimacy, and connection, and are not easily envious.
The recent release of Zendaya’s film Challengers has stoked curiosity about “throuples” and polyamory. The film’s protagonist, played by Zendaya, finds herself caught up in a convoluted romance triangle with two men. Television series such as Gossip Girl and Tiger King also include symbiosexual couplings.
